Albania


House of Wied :

On November 28, 1912 Albania was granted independence from the Ottoman Empire.  In London, a Conference of Ambassadors gathered to determine the new country's borders and government.  They chose Prince William of Wied as the ruler of the Principality of Albania.  He arrived in Albania in March 1914, however the First World War started a few months later and he fled back to Germany.

House of Zog :

In 1924 Ahmet Zogu overthrew the government of Albania and became it's president.  On September 1, 1928 he was proclaimed King Zog I.  Zog married a Hungarian Countess by the name of Geraldine Apponyi in April 1938.  On April 7, 1939 Italian forces invaded and Zog was forced to flee the country.
